Decolonizing Wealth in the Season of Giving

At this time of the year, between gift-giving and year-end donations, we might consider where our wealth comes from and the consequences of living in a vastly inequitable economy rooted in a system that was built (quite literally) on the backs of some for the benefit of others. In this highly interactive meeting, we will discuss several topics that flow from the concept of decolonizing wealth, first in a fishbowl style and then in small groups. We hope to ultimately connect the dots to how our choices can impact our current financial system, especially during this season of spending.

Please remember to come into the church from the large parking lot on the north side of the church that is accessible off of Glencoe St, that is just east of the church. The door to the church you should use is the one that opens onto that parking lot. If you have passengers with mobility difficulties, you can pull up to that entrance and then park in the lot or on the street. We will be meeting UPSTAIRS in the Balcony Parlour this month. Take the elevator in the short hallway to the second level.

Making Sense of the Role of Elections

Multiple seismic events seem to be coming at us in rapid succession.  This month we plan to look at hopeful ones as well as some that present great challenges. First, we want to invite anyone who participated in last weekend’s electrifying Denver White Privilege Symposium to share some of what you learned and were motivated to do.  Many of us were among the almost 500 participants.
And next, we want to take a look at the election process which is becoming more and more a blood sport in American life.  We will have multiple break out groups to look at election impacts, the role of elections in advancing democracy and humanity, how they express tribalism, and other related topics.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Many of you have heard that Park Hill United Methodist Church is now a sanctuary location with a family currently seeking refuge there.  Security has been enhanced as we continue to be welcomed to use the building for our meetings.  We can only enter the building from the parking lot where someone will be there to open the door for us.  You may not be able to gain access if you are more than 45 minutes late.

This Month in History we will reflect on October 11, 1944, when U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in Korematsu v. United States, which upheld the constitutionality of the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. STRF-member Alvin Seichi Otsuka will share his experience as a Japanese American, and the extent of intergenerational healing that is needed.

We will then bring the theme of resiliency to the present, specifically the topic of the Senate Hearings, and the re-triggering of so many of us based on Professor Blasey Ford’s powerful testimony. How do you practice resiliency? How can we take care of ourselves and our communities in this current treacherous environment? What do we need from each other?

Please join us for an evening of peaceful mindfulness.

Please note that I am posting this on the day after the meeting. Sorry for my failure to get the posting up on time!

Reflections of Othering

We start off our 2018-19 year with a conversation focusing on personal experiences with “othering.” Based on various social identities we each inhabit, at some point in our lives it is likely that we have been made to feel like an outsider. At the same time, we have been taught (mis)information about our own and other groups that have likely led us to treat others like outsiders. What have we been taught? How have these problematic messages impacted the relationships in our lives? How do we unlearn these messages so that we can build healthy, authentic relationships across social differences? These are some of the many questions we will discuss to bring intersectionality and understanding to the forefront as we kick off the 20th year of STRF.
